Working with the new moon: a practical approach
July 22, 2026

The new moon is three days, not one night.
The cultural shorthand around new moon intention-setting has collapsed into a single evening ritual: journal your goals, light a candle, close the circle. That version isn't wrong, but it misses the texture of what lunar timing is actually good for.
What the new moon period is
In most working traditions, the new moon begins in the two to three days before the dark moon — when the moon is invisible — and extends through the first sliver of visible waxing crescent. That full window is the new moon period. Intention work in this window doesn't need to compress into a single evening.
The dark moon (the night the moon is fully absent) sits in the middle of this period. It's conventionally a time for internal work, release, and rest rather than active casting. If you're consistently doing your most ambitious new moon work on the exact night of the dark moon, you may find it heavier than the surrounding days.
A working structure
Day one of the new moon period: review and release. What from the last cycle hasn't resolved? Write it out. You're not casting anything yet — you're clearing the ground.
Day two (dark moon or close to it): rest or minimal practice. This is not the night for big intentions. It's the night to sit with what you wrote on day one.
Day three onward (waxing crescent visible): set intentions. The energy of the waxing phase supports new growth, which is why intention-setting happens HERE, not at the dark. Write your intentions in present tense, specific and grounded. One clear intention lands better than seven aspirational ones.
The lunar calendar as a tool, not a performance
You don't need to do something every new moon. A practice that treats every lunar event as a mandatory ritual is one that becomes exhausting by March and abandoned by June.
The lunar calendar is a timing tool. Use it when you have actual work to do — an intention to set, a cycle to track, a release that's genuinely ready. Missing a moon because you have nothing to bring to it is not a failure. It's discernment.
The Lunar Veil bundle includes a 13-month ritual calendar designed around this three-day structure, with pages for each moon phase rather than a single new-moon page. The intention is to make the extended window visible, not to prescribe what you do within it.
